Mountain Residence No. 03, [Utah] US

description:

The site sits at a little over 10,300 ft above sea level, with significant snowfall occuring between November until June. With snowloads that high, the structure needed to be substantially larger than that of a normal house. The site posed a set of unique challenges and opportunities due to a large rock outcropping that cuts through it. The house engages the site as a kind of structural prosthetic, leveraging the solidity of the outcropping to support the span of one volume onto another. Using a combination of Glu lam beams and steel I beams, and concrete; a framework is created that creates a continuous space between a living room on the lower level and bedroom / private spaces on the upper levels.
